Artist's Comments

This is the first all-digital painting I've done completely from reference, rather just using a basic reference and then interpreting from there. I've been trying to work more in grayscale to get a better instinct for lighting. I love colour, but this medium is a better training ground.

Anyway. I'm proud of it. I feel like I have a lot to learn, but I think I'm getting better all the time, which a good feeling. I'm slowly but surely incorporating everything I've learned from other people and all of their amazing work. Cheers.

Criticism (especially specific) is greatly appreciated.

Face it, Harl, this stinks. You're a certified nutso wanted in two dozen states, and hopelessly in love with a psychopathic clown.

Oooo, that is creepy, but you keep staring anyway. His eyes just suck you in. Very well done.

Screwy, but smart.

You've really captured the soul of Jareth... that beautiful darkness quality that makes him so fascinating. I really like this.

Wonderful job - the shading is dramatic and eyecatching, and the background adds depth without detracting from the image by being over detailed. I really like it!

The face is beautifully realised, although I'd argue about the fringe-length hair - its a bit static and harsh looking.

Thanks for the comment! It was very helpful- probably the most helpful so far.

I was working from a cap, so I wanted to get the background looking sort of out of focus without using a filter. A filter is way too obvious, since I wanted it to have a painted effect, I went with crazy loose details and blurred it a tiny bit.

I see what you mean- the hair is definitely static. If I clean this up in the near future, I'll add more movement. Hair is definitely not one of my strong suits yet.

You're welcome! Glad to help ^_^

And seeing as you've admitted to having trouble with hair - aren't the people who can get it perfect and make it look effortless just plain disgusting? :D
